Women’s Hormone Replacement Therapy

Every woman has different needs and requires an approach that works for her.

Solution: Capsules, cream, suppositories, troches, sublingual solutions

Hormone Replacement Therapy:

The hormones in our body are a key component to our overall health. We know the importance of having a balanced ratio between estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA. We also recognize the role that our sex hormones play with cortisol and insulin. All of these hormones also interact with our thyroid hormone so balance between all of them is crucial to how we feel. Your hormone levels will change throughout your lifetime and these fluctuations influence how much hormone is being made and how much hormone we need to replace. We are knowledgeable in the arena of Hormone Replacement Therapy and would love to work with you and your doctor to determine the best customized hormone medication for you.

  • Estrogen – Your body makes three types of natural estrogen: Estriol, Estradiol and Estrone. Your body has receptor sites for these estrogens all over your body – in your brain, muscles, bone, bladder, ovaries, heart and eyes, to name a few and these estrogens fit right into the receptor sites – which means that our body knows how to absorb them, metabolize them, utilize them and excrete them. Estrogen replacement can help relieve many postmenopausal symptoms, decrease the risks associated with osteoporosis and improve vaginal health. Ask about our estrogen cream.
  • Progesterone – Natural progesterone is a natural hormone that helps with symptoms associated with mood – anxiety, irritability, insomnia, mood swings and depression. Progesterone also helps to counter estrogen dominance. Estrogen needs progester-one to work effectively and monitoring your estrogen:progesterone ratio with progesterone replacement, if needed is important in your overall health.
  • Androgens – Testosterone and DHEA are both androgens. They are normally produced in young, healthy women and are important for libido, energy, integrity of skin, bone and muscle. As we age, these levels tend to decline and replacement helps to improve symptoms and levels in the body. While many women benefit from Hormone Replacement Therapy alone, it is critical that we look at adrenals and thyroid function as well. Diet, nutrition and exercise also play a role in our hormone health.

Vulvar discomfort described as burning pain, stinging, rawness or irritation most or all of the time. Some woman get so uncomfortable that sitting for long periods of time is terrible and sexual intimacy becomes unthinkable. This often goes on for months or years with no relief. Ask our compounding pharmacist what treatment options we have available to help lessen the pain and discomfort.

Lichens Sclerosis:

Lichens Sclerosis is thought to be an autoimmune condition in which the immune system becomes overactive and causes thinning and inflammation of vulvar tissue and skin. It causes white patches with itching, pain, tearing and peeling of the skin on the vulva and around the anus. Many woman cannot tolerate traditional treatment options. Ask us what other options compounding may be able to offer.

Adrenal Dysfunction and Chronic Stress:

Cortisol is the only hormone in your body that increases in amount with age. It is known as the stress hormone because it is what our body releases in response to stress. The more stressed you are, the higher your cortisol levels. As stress decreases, those levels will come back down. The greater amount of stress we experience – whether it is stress related to job, family pressures, money, menopause symptoms, a chronic medical condition, etc. – the greater the risk of that stress becoming chronic – and resulting in Adrenal Dysfunction. This can ultimately lead to:

  • Mood disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Dementia/memory loss
  • Inability to sleep
  • Weight gain
  • Insulin resistance – diabetes – higher glucose levels
  • Reproductive disorders
  • Increased blood pressure

Over time, the body may no longer be able to continue to produce the amounts of cortisol it needs and ultimately end up with low cortisol levels – adrenal fatigue – when our adrenal glands become burnt out due to overstimulation.

Many women experience some form of Adrenal Dysfunction. Talk to our compounding pharmacist today about effective treatment options including supplements, sleep hygiene, stress reduction techniques, adaptogens and pharmacologic therapy.
