Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disorders characterized by marked socialization, communication and behavioral challenges. Over the past few years, the rate of reported Autism Spectrum Disorders has increased significantly. Currently, no cure exists, however compounding pharmacists can assist patients and caregivers in a variety of different ways to help manage ASD.

Children can be a challenging patient population to correctly dose, since their body and organ functions undergo continuous development. These changes can affect how the drug absorbs, is metabolized, used and excreted from the body. Many times, the medications used to treat these patients must be titrated and the dose may not fit into a typical dosage form or the drug being used may be prescribed for off-label use and the dose must be compounded to achieve the correct dose. The majority of these dosage forms need to be tailored specifically for the individual patient due to dosages above or below commercially available options and in dosage forms that meet each patient’s taste and texture preferences while keeping in mind specific dietary restrictions, such as gluten or casein.
